What stick does Marie-Philip Poulin use?
Marie-Philip Poulin has established herself as perhaps the greatest women's hockey player of all time, scoring not one, not two, but three game winning goals in Olympic Gold Medal games. With the @pwhpa set to launch a new professional league next year, the profile of women's hockey continues to rise, and Poulin's star power has been a big part of that.
This stick from Poulin is a few generations old and the build is even older - 1X Lite Graphic with Nexus 1000 construction. Though the OG Nexus build remains popular among pros, we can't say for sure if Poulin is still using it - what we do know is that she has since adapted this PM9 pattern, which has significantly dropped in popularity in recent years, to feature a bit of a modern toe curve.
According to her in a recent Sportsnet feature, "My curve is always very straight, so I wanted three quarters of my blade pretty straight still, but the last bit of my curve has a little toe, so I can snap it or grab it when I’m closer to the net". It's always interesting to hear from the world's best athletes on how they dial in the tools of the trade. Kinking the toe to varying degrees while leaving the mid-heel portion of a traditional pattern has been a trend the past few seasons, giving us curves like the Pro Benn, Pro Malkin, and Pro O'Reilly.
We can't wait to learn more about this new league and are excited for there to be a new stage to watch more of Poulin and her counterparts playing some outstanding hockey!
➡️ Poulin's former agent, Émilie Castonguay (now the Canucks AGM), shared this awesome behind the scenes look at Marie-Philip dialing in her specs with Bauer last year. Interesting to get a sneak peek at what this process actually looks like!
